Alma Holds Off Vikings to Win Season Opener

The Alma Cardinals took on the Bertrand Vikings on Friday, August 30th to open the 2019 season with a win. In the first quarter, Ehren Smolik gets a 13-yard pass from Daylan Russell for the touchdown. Russell runs for a two-point conversion making the score 8-0. Bertrand makes a 1-yard run and has a failed the two-point conversion to make the score 8-6 in favor of the Cardinals to the end of the first quarter. 

In the second quarter, Nathan Hock had a two-yard run and again Russell runs for a two-point conversion making the score to 16-6. Bertrand gets a 6-yard pass and another failed two-point conversion to make the score 16-12. Russell's  40-yard run adds another touchdown. Ayden Molzahn runs the two-point conversion making the score to be 24-12 as the teams head to the locker room at half time.  

In the 3rd quarter, Antonio Hudson gets a 42-yard pass from Russell. Russell runs for a two-point conversion making the score 32-12. Bertrand had a 4 yard run and a failed two-point conversion to close the gap a little with a score of 32-18. Russell had a 44-yard run and a failed two-point conversion to make the score 38-18 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Bertrand is the only team to score with a 67-yard fumble return and a failed two-point conversion.  Alma was able to hold the Bertrand offense from scoring again for the game to end with a score of 38-24. 

Some Stats leaders on offense are Daylan Russell with 15/23 attempts for 247 yards. Russell also had 103 rushing yards and with a total of 2 touchdowns. Ayden Molzahn had 53 yards of rushing on 18 carries. Smolik lead in receptions with 108 yards on 7 catches.  He had one touchdown. Isaac McCurdy had 60 receiving yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Isaac McCurdy lead the team in tackles with 14 and 3 tackles for a loss. Ayden Molzahn followed with 9 tackles and 2 tackles for a loss. Jason Stenka had one tackle for loss. Antonio Hudson averages 13 yards on 3 returns for the special teams.  The Cardinals will continue their season against Northern Valley on Friday, September 6th in Alma.
